For centuries, numismatic art has been recognized and appreciated worldwide. The commemorative coins crafted, along with their artistic designs, have been distinguished in national anonymous competitions held by the Bulgarian National Bank (BNB).

In Bulgaria most of the coins minted are struck in three types of metal:

Copper - 999/1000
Silver (Ag) - 999, 925/1000, with or without partial gilding
Investment gold (Au) – 999/1000
